The Gespenster project was born from the Gespenster I collection of gouache drawings created by Ety Fefer. Inspired by the drawings, Ricardo Martín developed an artificial intelligence (AI) model in the Stable Diffusion program, the Gespenster Zs. The result led to a collaborative process in which AI-generated drawings inspired Ety to create another series, Gespenster II.

Gespenster Z

Nacidos de la Inteligencia Artificial

When Ety saw what AI had produced from her creation, her reaction was a mixture of awe and admiration. However, it was the program's errors and limitations that spurred Fefer to create the next series of drawings, Gespepenster II. Gespepenster Z represents the fast and efficient production of artificial intelligence, while Gespepenster I and II represent the slow and meditative creation of the artist. Together, the two collections reflect on the nature of human and technological artistic expression.

OpenAI Stable Diffusion

The Gespenster I series was used to train the first Stable Diffusion model. After some initial tests, the result gave Ety nightmares, but it then allowed her to understand that the program can also become a useful tool.

The Gespenster Z that emerged from Stable Diffusion appeared suddenly, like an invasion of ghosts fostered by Fefer's creatures. Her only option was to adopt the newcomers and let them inspire a new series, The Gespenster II.

The answer to Gespenster Z

They are like the children of the Gespenster I + Gespenster Z, the drawings inspired by those produced by the AI, one more twist in the creative process that would not have occurred, at least in this way, without the Gespenster Z. They have a larger format, on 300 gr cotton paper measuring 35 x50 cm.

Exhibition

Gespenster Z live creation exhibition:

The exhibition is designed to show the complete creative process, from the original drawings of Ety Fefer to the generation of new works using the live Artificial Intelligence. We also seek to encourage public participation that can interact in the creation of new Gespenster Z in each presentation.
The exhibition establishes a dialogue between the works created by Ety, the Gespenster I and II, and the "laboratory" showing the works already generated by the IA, the Genspester Z, while producing new works in situ, with the IA operated by Ricardo Martin.

Once the new Gespenster Z are created during the Lab hours, they are printed on the spot. Both handmade originals and prints from various Gespenster I and II and Gespenster Z series are shown.
